Eligibility

1. To qualify for an InterRail Pass, you must be permanently resident in or have been temporarily resident for a period of at least 6 months immediately preceding the first day of validity of the pass in one of the countries listed below ("eligible countries"). A qualifying resident of an eligible country, in which there is no participating railway, (please see list below), (e.g. Albania) may still purchase an InterRail Global Pass or an InterRail One Country Pass.

2. The InterRail Adult Pass is for those aged 26 years or over on the first day of validity. The InterRail Youth Pass is for those who are under 26 but over 11 years on the first day of validity. The InterRail Child Pass is for those aged 4 to 11 years inclusive on the first day of validity. Children under the age of 4 usually travel free subject to the conditions imposed by participating railways.

Validity of Pass

3. The InterRail pass is valid on all participating railways except those in the passholder's country of residence but there may be purchased in the country of residence a return ticket for direct travel from the station nearest the place of residence to the station of departure from that country at a reduced price. Please see table below for the applicable reductions but please note that reductions may change from time to time and without notice.

4. The InterRail pass can only be issued up to three months in advance of the first intended date of travel. The InterRail Global Pass is available for continuous use either for 22 days or for one month and as a flexible pass for 5 days within any period of 10 days or 10 days within any period of 22 days. The InterRail One Country Pass is available for use either on 3, 4, 6 or 8 days in any period of one month.

5. A valid passport and satisfactory proof of permanent residency or residency for 6 months or more in an eligible country must be held and shown upon purchase and whenever required.

6. The InterRail pass is personal and non-transferable and may be used only by the bearer.

7. During your trip, the InterRail pass is only valid if you can produce when asked, the same proof of identity/residence/age (identity card, passport or residence permit etc) that you nominated at the time of purchasing your InterRail pass. The information written on your pass (e.g your name, passport/identity card number, country of residence etc) may be checked to ensure that it matches those details given on your proof of identity. If it does not, your pass may be rendered void and taken from you. No responsibility is accepted in respect of the issue of any pass based on inaccurate information supplied.

8. The InterRail pass is not valid on all trains - e.g. Spanish high speed trains AVE and TALGO 200, and on the German 'Metropolitan' services between Hamburg and Essen, Dusseldorf and Cologne. The InterRail Pass may not be valid on other trains and services from time to time. We will try to advise of these.

9. The InterRail Adult Pass and the InterRail Child Pass are valid for travel in the class of accommodation to which they apply. Where a pass is not valid for first class accommodation, upgrades to first class may be purchased. However, first class accommodation is not available with the InterRail Youth Pass.

Use of Pass

10. Before each journey that you make, you will have to complete details of that journey (e.g date, time, departure and arrival stations, the train/ship number and what type of seat/sleeper accommodation you are using.) This must be written in black or blue before embarkation on a special form that will be provided at the time of purchase and which will need to be produced for validation on request. You should also include details of any journeys made, where it has been necessary to purchase an additional ticket. A day runs from 00.00 to 23.59. If a journey is taken on a direct overnight train, which departs on the day before the day of arrival, the date for entry on the pass is the day of arrival. With an overnight ferry, the date for entry on the pass is either the day of departure or the day of arrival. Travel may not be taken before the first day of validity of the pass or after the last day of validity.

11. Seat reservation fees, couchette & sleeper fees, cabin, berth and reclining seat fees and port taxes are not included in the price of the InterRail pass. Other supplementary charges (e.g. seasonal supplements) may be imposed from time to time and we will try to advise of these. Reservations and passholder fares for Inter Rail passholders are limited and are subject to availability at the time of booking. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

12. Supplements may be required on some rail journeys and are normally required on Alfa, Artesia, EC, ES, IC, ICE, InterCityLyn, S200 Pendolino, TALGO, X2000, EN, CIS, CityNightLine, Lusitania, Myrdal/Flam, Thalys and Trenhotel services. Supplements may be required on other services from time to time. We will try to advise of these. A special pass holder rate applies to Eurostar services.

13. It is your responsibility to ensure that you comply with all passport, visa and health requirements.

14. Please check the requirements of the participating railway as to the conditions applicable to the travel of children/young people. In some cases it is a requirement that a child is accompanied by an adult and it may be necessary to produce the consent of a parent or guardian to the making of the journey. The applicable child reduction is 50% off the price of the InterRail Adult Pass.

15. An InterRail pass gives no entitlement to a seat. Seat reservations are compulsory on some journeys.

16. Bonuses may be available to holders of InterRail passes from certain participating railways where the pass is valid in the country of that railway. Please refer to particular country pages for applicable conditions.

17. Ticket inspectors may confiscate the pass where data have not been completed or have been altered or where supporting evidence of identity/residence/age cannot be provided or is not satisfactory. In such cases payment for the full price of the ticket for the journey being undertaken will be required and a penalty will be imposed.

Cancellation Fees

18. No refund will be given on partially used, lost or stolen InterRail passes and no refund after the commencement date on any pass unless before the first day of validity the pass has been returned to Customer Services, International Rail Limited, Chase House, Gilbert Street, Ropley, Hampshire SO24 0BY and marked by official Railway Personnel with two diagonal crossing lines across the front of the ticket and the words "Not used", signed and stamped with an official ticket office date stamp.

The request for a refund must then be made within one month of the last day of validity of the pass to the company where the pass was purchased and the pass must be handed in, marked, signed and stamped as above. There is no entitlement to a refund or part refund where travel is taken in a class of accommodation lower than that permitted by the pass. Where a refund is permitted, a 15% cancellation fee will be charged in addition to a £10 administrative charge, in all cases.

If a pass has to be exchanged (for example if the validity date needs changing), this will be classed as a cancellation and return postage will be charged in addition to cancellation and administrative fees.

If an order for a rail pass or product is received and found to be incorrect, in as much as you are not entitled to what has been ordered, an admin fee of £12.00 will be charged to cancel the order.

There are ususally two reasons for this:

(1) Country of residence is entered incorrectly - this should relate to the 6 months prior to date of travel, not what is on the passport/ nationality.

(2) Age - close attention should be made as to whether the traveller is youth/adult/senior

Lost or Stolen Passes

19. If your InterRail pass is lost or stolen, it cannot be re-issued or refunded. A refund may only be obtained if the pass is returned to the original point of sale before the first date of validity. A cancellation fee will be charged. It is recommended that you take out insurance to cover loss and theft.

20. Should you lose or have your InterRail pass stolen while abroad this may be covered under your travel insurance policy, if you purchased one, subject to the terms of the policy.

Booking Conditions

21. Internet Bookings are subject to our Website Conditions of use and Booking Conditions

22. The conditions of the Common International Tariff for the Transport of Passengers Section 1 (Volume 1) and its Special Appendices relating to sleeping accommodation and seat reservations apply, except insofar as they conflict with the above.
