Train Types & Services Onboard

There are four types of trains used within Portugal, the Alfa Pendular, the Intercidades, the Inter-Regional and the Regional & Urbano trains.

Please see below for full information on all trains and what services they have to offer, once onboard.

Alfa Pendular

The comfort and safety of the 'Alfa Pendular' trains offers the perfect environment to work or relax during journeys and service places such as Faro, Lisbon, Porto and Braga.

The Alfa Pendular trains have a cafeteria, mini bar, audio and video channels (earphones can be obtained on request), baby changing facilities, WC's and places especially for reduced mobility passengers. Services on board the 'Alfa Pendular' trains have been designed with customer safety, comfort and quality in mind.

• Classe Conforto (1st class) - Passengers are offered a 'welcome kit' including a drink, snack, newspaper (or magazine) and earphones so that they can listen to the audio and video channels on the train. They also have a call button and can take their meals to their seat. Some seats also have power sockets so that laptops or electrical devices can be charged.
• Classe Turistica (2nd class) - Passengers can get earphones from the bar area and there is also a mobile minibar service that travels up and down the train selling beverages and snacks. If your ticket is for travel on an Alfa Pendular train then you can book your meals when purchasing your ticket, please contact us for further details.

Intercidades Trains

The 'Intercidades' service is designed for leisure and family trips as well as tourism and business. Therefore there are a wide range of timetables that allow you to organise your travel times more easily. The Intercidades trains service places such as Faro, Lisbon, Entroncamento and Guarda but to name a few.

Quality has been a major factor in this service allowing daily trips to the main towns and cities within Portugal. Intercidades services have a buffet bar, WC and air conditioning and with a wide range of times it is now even easier to reach a destination and return the same day.

Inter-Regional

Inter-Regional trains offer rail journeys from Lisbon to most of mid and northern Portugal. These trains are not as fast as the Intercidades or the Alfa Pendular but offer cheaper fares but you still get to benefit from comfortable seats and a scaled down interior of the two above trains.

Regional/Urbano Trains

These Regional/Urbano trains offer journeys between southern Portugal such as V. Real Sto Antonio to northern Portugal as far up as Valenca. The regional/urbano fares are very good value for money offering you a basic seat and limited services onboard.

Please note that these are the slowest trains on the fleet and stop off at most stations in between the larger destinations therefore if you aren't in a rush to get to your destination or do not mind frequent stops and changes then travelling on one of these would be perfect.
